FIND YOUR ADRENALINE – ACTIVE ADVENTURES IN ELLENVILE
DAY ONE – Afternoon Arrival
Catch Some Air
Ellenville is the hang gliding capital of the northeast U.S., and there are several schools to choose from to learn the sport. Here’s your chance to glide over green mountain ranges for a bird’s eye view. Try the Ellenville Flight Park, Fly High Hang Gliding, or Mountain Wings Flight Park.
Set Up Camp
Sleep under the stars! Camping is a popular way to stay in Ellenville, so set up at the Skyway Camping Resort – the grounds offer plenty of amenities, like a pool, clubhouse, fitness center, and arcade. Jellystone Park™ at Birchwood Acres has exciting extras, too, like a water park and sports courts.
What’s For Dinner?
You’ll have plenty of choices along the Canal Street “restaurant row.” It’s casual cooking at Gaby’s Café, a Mexican cantina, or Tony and Nick’s Italian Kitchen. You may need reservations at the more upscale Aroma Thyme Bistro or the Publik House.
Take the Day on Two Wheels
This is what you came for – a day of outdoor adventure. Grab a bagged lunch at Wilson’s Market or Cohen’s Bakery, and bring your bike out on the trails. There are plenty to choose from, but Lippman Park is known as one of the best mountain biking trails in New York. There’s also the Long Path, Smiley Carriage Trail, the Shawangunk Loop, and the Delaware & Hudson Canal Heritage Corridor. There are more route ideas and resources about bicycling in Ulster County here.
Dinner and a Show
If it’s a weekend, chances are good that there’s a show at Shadowlands Stages, a historic theater presenting professional Equity plays and musicals. Start the evening with dinner downtown – try the iconic Ellenville Diner, or the Sook House for Korean and Japanese delicacies.
Get your nature fix by spending the morning hiking. Need a goal? Set your sights on reaching Sam’s Point, the highest point of the Shawangunk Mountains, rising more than 2,200 feet above sea level. The trek along the trails through Sam’s Point Preserve is well worth the effort.
Take a Detour
On your way home, head to Highland to access the west entrance of the Walkway Over the Hudson, the world’s longest elevated pedestrian bridge. The views from 200+-feet over the Hudson River are amazing. Ulster County also offers fishing, kayaking, horseback riding, rappelling, guided bird watching walks and eco-tours, and many other outdoor adventures, all within 30 minutes of Ellenville.
